African Self Drive Tours - On the Road
A lot of people want to enjoy their holiday all by themselves, not compromising with other fellow-traveller. For this reason we have calculated a self drive tour. You will receive a map, showing all routes and overnights, as well as a tour itinerary, containing places of interest on the route, a table with km specifications and a time planer for each route. You will not be left completely on your own.
ITINERARY:
Arrival in Windhoek, the car rental firm will greet you at the airport, bringing you to the city of Windhoek, where the formalities of the rented vehicle will be settled. Afterwards you can settle in at your pension/guest house.
With your itinerary and map you can easily find your way around Windhoek/Namibia, and so your trip starts to the north to the Omaruru Game Ranch. Either at the water hole next to your bungalow or on a game drive you can view abundant wild live. Habitat of Elephants, rhinos, giraffes, zebras, antelopes, cheetahs, leopards and many more.
Next to the Etosha National Park, the staff of the Naua Naua Lodge wellcoms you. From there you can enter into the park with you owen car, or one of the tourguides will accompany you for a gamedrive.
Through Mopane savannah the road leads through the village "Khorixas", meaning "place of the Khori bush" in Damara language. Here, this bush grows in abundance, and is very nutritious for birds and small animals. At the Lodge you can enjoy a dip in the pool, or undertake an excursion to the rock engravings, organ pipes, burned mountain and petrified forest at Twyfelfontein.
Slowly the landscape gets scanty; one notices, that the desert is making it's appearance. On the way the seal colony is visited, before travelling further along the coast line to the coastal town of Swakopmund. Swakopmund offers a lot of scenery; museum, aquarium or the snake park. A stroll through town or an excursion to Walvis bay can be undertaken. Different airlines offer daily flights over the Namib desert.
On the way to the highest dunes of the world and the "valley of death" in the Sossusvlei, you can visit the moon landscape and the indigenous plant, which only grows in the Namib desert, the "Welwitschia mirabilis". On the guest farm, Desert Homestead, you will be warmly welcomed, experience the hospitality of your hosts.
The differences between the Kalahari and the Namib is noticeable. Within the red dunes under the kamelthorn trees, you will see the antilopes looking for shade.
The unique styled clay building blends perfectly with the russet-coloured sands of the surrouding Kalahari. Enjoying a typical Namibian day on this rustic and comfortable guest farm, you can recall adventurous memories of your past trip, before leaving for home.
